Yeah, those are pretty much my feelings on the matter. Kelamis, Drummond and McNeil actually sound like Goku, Vegeta and Piccolo (respectively) despite the fact that they don't try to imitate their Japanese counterparts--it's their on take on the characters, and one that I feel is closer to how they're supposed to sound than any of the Funimation voices. A lot of that is owed to charisma and this scenery-chewing that actually works. And I'm not a native English-speaker, meaning I'm not nostalgic for this or any other North-American dub. Drummond sounds just fine in the latter portion of the series. Honestly, the sinister voice contrasts really well with the "good guy" dialogue. Really hammers home how much he's changed as a character, at least in my opinion. |

To each their own I guess. I'm fine with Drummond's performance in earlier parts of the series but I don't think he holds up nearly as well during later parts, although Drummond's probably a blessing compared to the later actors they got in the Ocean Dub. I may be willing to give Drummond a pass but some characters in the Ocean Dub like Cell, No. 16, No. 17, Fat Boo, No. 19, No. 18, Freeza, Babidi, Gotenks...the list goes on. All of them range from pitifully average to downright terrible. Drummond along with a select few others are the only ones that actually sound decent, probably because they're the only ones who put emotion into their acting, the Ocean Dub actors later on completely lacked any semblance of inflection. Meaning not only did many of their voices just not fit, they didn't have the emotion or structure to stand out. In so many cases later on, the Ocean Dub came off as stilted and stiff. |

Same here. Scott McNeil in particular gets my vote because every time I hear him in any show I've watched he's immediately loveable, badass or both. |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

So what is it? You prefer being kicked in the balls or in the face? I'm curious here. |

Sorry, I'm watching that clip and Drummond sounds perfectly fine to me. It's just different from Sabat's performance and by that time Sabat stopped his damn poor Drummond imitation and made the role his own (but Sabat didn't perfect it until Kai and Super) I don't disagree that the Ocean dub fell hugely in quality when it picked by up in the Android saga but Drummond and Mcneil continued to be good. And I really didn't mind Fat Boo's Elmo voice either. Better than Cell's terrible Ocean dub voice to be sure. |

Scott McNeil is probably one of those actors who did actually manage to evolve his Piccolo voice, whether intentionally or not, I don't know. In the past, his voice would be very raspy and I believe higher pitched but as the series went on, it became deeper and less raspy. The deeper, more matured voice better fit a Piccolo who had not only grown older but had completely abandoned his evil ways and had become more calm and collected individual. Although there were times when McNeil could fall back into his old ways. McNeil's early voice for Piccolo worked fine for a Piccolo who was evil or questionable. It would've worked with something like 23rd Budokai or early Saiyan Arc, but it would never have fit passed his fusion with God. Luckily, McNeil seemed to find a way to evolve his voice and if anything, it seemed to evolve slightly even through the Freeza and early Cell Arcs. |

It's been forever but was Piccolo even IN THE Freeza arc at the time Mcneil was voicing the character? I could have sworn after he died we didn't see him again until they summoned Porunga at which point the Funimation in-house team took over and the Ocean Group never dubbed that portion. |

I mean the portions where the Ocean Dub went back to voice the rest of the series. I'm assuming McNeil went back and did the rest of the Freeza Arc. However through a few of these clips, you can see how McNeil's Piccolo has subtly changed throughout its tenure. Spoiler: click to toggle Back in the Saiyan Arc, it had younger, lighter more raspier sound to it. It has a very villainous quality which, considering who Piccolo was, fit fine. Spoiler: click to toggle His voice here in the Boo Arc, or at least in this clip, is a lot deeper and less raspy than McNeil used during the three movies or early Saiyan Arc. Again, I don't know if it was intentional but it gives Piccolo a lot more maturity and evolution over his more evil sounding, raspy voice of the early series and movies. |

Ocean Group never went back and dubbed the rest of the Freeza arc. They dubbed the first two seasons for all english speaking countries and then provided an alternate English dub for the UK, Canada, and some other English speaking countries starting with the episode Goku's special technique. There is no Ocean Group version of the episodes Ginyu Assault- Mystery Revealed. |

I don't think I've come across the Ocean Dub much in recent years. The one scene I can say they did better than Funimation was when Vegeta is enraged at Gohan taking the dragon ball that he hid in the water on Namek. He was genuinely terrifying. |

Yeh he seems pretty good. The music definitely helps that scene vs Vegeta. |
